Career Planning: Empowering Youth to Shape Their Future
From Dreams to Direction: A Journey of Career Planning in Chitral Valley
In the breathtaking landscapes of Chitral Valley, surrounded by towering mountains and rich cultural heritage, a group of young people gathered with a shared aspiration—to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities. As part of the 3-Day Youth Camp under the GN Global Youth Programme, organized by Good Neighbors International and implemented by SHAD Foundation in collaboration with Hamsaya Private Company, participants embarked on a transformative journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and career planning.
For many young people living in remote areas of Pakistan, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, and other underserved regions, opportunities for career guidance and professional mentorship are often limited. Yet these communities are home to talented, ambitious, and energetic youth who possess immense potential. What they need is direction, support, and access to opportunities that can help them transform their aspirations into achievable goals.
Recognizing this need, SHAD Foundation has been actively working to empower young people through youth camps, skill development trainings, educational talks, mentorship sessions, and community engagement initiatives. These efforts are designed not only to equip youth with practical skills but also to nurture their confidence, strengthen their mental well-being, and encourage them to become productive contributors to society.
Understanding the Importance of Career Planning
One of the key highlights of the recent youth camp was a full day dedicated to career planning, mental health awareness, and personal development activities. The objective was simple yet powerful: to help participants understand themselves better and make informed decisions about their future careers.
Career planning is more than choosing a profession. It is a lifelong process of identifying personal strengths, interests, values, and ambitions while developing a clear roadmap to achieve one’s goals. Effective career planning enables young people to make purposeful decisions regarding education, skill development, employment, and entrepreneurship.
During interactive sessions, participants were encouraged to reflect on important questions:
- What are my strengths and talents?
- What motivates me?
- What skills do I need to achieve my goals?
- How can I contribute positively to my community?
- What opportunities exist within and beyond my region?
Through group discussions, practical exercises, and mentorship activities, youth learned how to align their passions with realistic career pathways.
Building Confidence Through Self-Discovery
A recurring theme throughout the camp was the importance of self-awareness. Many young people often face uncertainty when making career decisions, especially when they lack access to professional guidance. By engaging in self-assessment activities, participants began to recognize their unique abilities and potential.
For some, the sessions sparked an interest in entrepreneurship. Others discovered opportunities in education, technology, social development, healthcare, tourism, and environmental conservation. More importantly, they learned that career success is not defined solely by financial achievement but also by personal fulfillment, community impact, and continuous learning.
Mental Health and Career Success
Career planning and mental well-being are closely connected. Young people facing stress, anxiety, or uncertainty about their future often struggle to pursue their ambitions with confidence. Therefore, alongside career development activities, the camp emphasized mental health awareness and resilience-building.
Participants explored strategies for managing stress, maintaining a positive mindset, setting realistic goals, and overcoming challenges. These discussions reinforced the message that personal well-being is an essential foundation for academic, professional, and social success.
Creating Opportunities for Remote Communities
At SHAD Foundation, we believe that geography should never determine a young person’s future. Whether living in the valleys of Chitral, the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, or other remote regions of Pakistan, every young individual deserves access to guidance, education, and opportunities that enable them to thrive.
Through partnerships, youth engagement programmes, and community-based initiatives, SHAD Foundation continues to create spaces where young people can learn, connect, and grow. By investing in career planning and personal development, we are helping youth become confident decision-makers, responsible citizens, and future leaders.
Looking Ahead
The success of the career planning sessions at the Chitral Youth Camp demonstrated the immense value of providing young people with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate their future. The enthusiasm, curiosity, and determination displayed by participants serve as a reminder that Pakistan’s greatest asset is its youth.
As SHAD Foundation continues its mission, we remain committed to empowering young people through education, mentorship, skill development, and psychosocial support. Together, we can help transform uncertainty into opportunity, dreams into plans, and plans into meaningful achievements.
Because when young people are equipped with vision, guidance, and hope, they do not merely plan their careers—they shape the future of their communities and the nation as a whole.
