SHAD Foundation's Commitment This International Women's Day

On this International Women’s Day, we reflect on a powerful truth: women’s rights mean nothing if we cannot defend them. As the world unites under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” SHAD Foundation reaffirms its unwavering commitment to creating pathways of opportunity, safety, and empowerment for women across Pakistan.

A Day of Reflection, Recognition, and Renewed Commitment

International Women’s Day is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. While we honor the achievements of women who have broken barriers, shattered glass ceilings, and paved the way for future generations, we must also confront an uncomfortable reality: the systems meant to protect women and girls are still failing them.

Globally, women hold only 64% of the legal rights that men possess. In many countries, discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, and harmful social norms continue to erode the fundamental rights of women and girls. In Pakistan, these challenges manifest in restricted access to education, limited economic opportunities, gender-based violence, and societal barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potential.

But here’s what we know at SHAD Foundation: challenges are not destiny. When women are given the right support, safe spaces, and genuine opportunities, they don’t just succeed, they transform entire communities.

From Rights to Reality: The SHAD Foundation Approach

The theme “Rights. Justice. Action” isn’t just a slogan for us—it’s our operational blueprint. Every day, through our Youth Development Centers and community programs, we translate these principles into tangible change.

Rights: We affirm that every young woman deserves access to quality education, safe accommodation, skill development opportunities, and the freedom to pursue her dreams without compromise. These aren’t privileges—they’re fundamental rights.

Justice: We work to dismantle the barriers—both visible and invisible—that deny women equal opportunities. This includes providing safe residential facilities for female students who would otherwise be unable to pursue education due to lack of secure housing, offering scholarships and financial support to those from marginalized backgrounds, creating pathways to economic independence through vocational training, and advocating for policies that protect and empower women.

Action: We don’t just talk about women’s empowerment—we make it happen through comprehensive programs that address education, skills, mental health, and career development; partnerships with organizations like Hashoo Foundation to expand our reach and impact; continuous adaptation to meet the evolving needs of the young women we serve; and measurable outcomes that demonstrate real change in lives and communities.

The Women We Serve, The Impact We Create

Behind every statistic is a story. Behind every program is a young woman whose life is changing. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women of SHAD Foundation—not as beneficiaries, but as leaders, changemakers, and proof of what becomes possible when rights meet action.

Nazia, who traveled from a remote village to Islamabad to pursue her degree in computer science. Our Youth Development Center didn’t just provide her accommodation—it gave her a community of supportive peers, access to technology training, and the confidence to compete for internships at tech companies. Today, she’s not just building her own career; she’s mentoring younger students from her hometown.

Sana, who faced family pressure to abandon her education for early marriage. Through our counseling and family engagement programs, she was able to continue her studies while maintaining family relationships. She’s now pursuing a degree in business administration and has already started a small online venture selling traditional crafts—creating economic opportunities for women artisans in her community.

Amna, whose dreams of becoming a teacher seemed impossible due to the prohibitive cost of city accommodation. Our subsidized hostel facility made education financially accessible. She graduated with honors and is now teaching in an underserved school, ensuring the next generation of girls receives the quality education she once struggled to access.

These aren’t exceptional cases—they’re examples of what SHAD Foundation enables every day. Each young woman who completes her education, gains employment, starts a business, or supports her family represents a victory not just for her, but for gender equality in Pakistan.

The Challenges That Persist

Honesty demands that we acknowledge how far we still have to go. Despite progress, significant challenges remain:

Access Barriers: Thousands of talented young women still cannot pursue education because safe, affordable accommodation near educational institutions doesn’t exist in their areas.

Economic Constraints: Poverty forces many families to prioritize sons’ education over daughters’, perpetuating cycles of gender inequality.

Social Norms: Deep-rooted cultural attitudes about women’s roles, mobility, and aspirations continue to limit opportunities, even for those who manage to access education.

Safety Concerns: The fear of harassment, violence, or social stigma prevents many young women from seeking opportunities outside their immediate communities.

Mental Health Struggles: The pressure of breaking barriers while managing family expectations, societal judgment, and personal doubts takes a significant emotional toll that often goes unaddressed.

At SHAD Foundation, we confront these challenges head-on, but we cannot do it alone. Sustainable change requires collective action from government, civil society, educational institutions, families, and communities.

A Call to Action: What You Can Do

International Women’s Day challenges each of us to move from awareness to action. Here’s how you can contribute to women’s empowerment in Pakistan:

For Families: Support your daughters’ educational and career aspirations with the same enthusiasm you support your sons’. Encourage, don’t restrict. Enable, don’t limit.

For Educators: Create inclusive learning environments where female students feel safe, valued, and challenged to reach their full potential. Recognize that some students face barriers beyond academics.

For Employers: Commit to gender-equal hiring, pay, and promotion practices. Create workplace policies that accommodate women’s needs without penalizing their career progression.

For Policymakers: Invest in infrastructure that enables women’s education and employment—safe transportation, affordable childcare, protective legislation, and enforcement of existing rights.

For Supporters: Organizations like SHAD Foundation rely on donors, volunteers, and partners to expand our reach. Your contribution—whether financial, professional expertise, or advocacy—directly translates into opportunities for deserving young women.

For Young Women: Know your worth. Pursue your dreams. Support other women. Your success inspires others, your struggles are valid, and your potential is limitless.

Looking Forward: The Pakistan We’re Building

We envision a Pakistan where a young woman’s potential isn’t limited by her gender, geography, or economic background. Where safe, quality education is accessible to all, not just the privileged few. Where women’s economic participation is celebrated, not questioned. Where girls grow up seeing limitless possibilities, not predetermined limitations.

This vision isn’t unrealistic, it’s achievable. We see it materializing every day through the young women who graduate from our programs, secure employment, support their families, and become role models in their communities.

But vision requires action. Dreams require investment. Progress requires commitment.
